Legend has it the town draws its name from rum washing ashore that was strong enough to kill the devil and the pirates that hid stolen barrels of it in the sand dunes. Today it’s a bustling town packed with shops and restaurants, but also home to beautiful natures trails, kayaking spots, and, of course, pristine beaches.
It’s also where you’ll find the Wright Brothers National Memorial- a monument to the site of the first powered flight.
To the north is Kitty Hawk and to the south is Nags Head.
